नाम एवं पर्याय: मृगनाभि, मृगमद, सहस्रभित्, कस्तूरिका, कस्तूरी और वेधमुख्या—ये सभी इसके विभिन्न नाम (पर्याय) कहे गए हैं।
उत्पत्ति और गुणों के आधार पर तीन भेद (Three Varieties): उत्पत्ति स्थान और रंग के आधार पर कस्तूरी तीन प्रकार की मानी गई है:
कामरूप (असम) की कस्तूरी: कामरूप देश में उत्पन्न होने वाली कस्तूरी काले रंग (कृष्णा) की होती है और इसे सर्वश्रेष्ठ (श्रेष्ठा) माना गया है।
नेपाल की कस्तूरी: नेपाल में उत्पन्न होने वाली कस्तूरी नीले रंग से युक्त (नीलवर्णयुक्) होती है और इसे मध्यम श्रेणी (मध्यमा) का माना गया है।
कश्मीर की कस्तूरी: कश्मीर देश में उत्पन्न होने वाली कस्तूरी हल्के भूरे या तांबे जैसे रंग (कपिलच्छाया) की होती है और इसे सबसे निम्न श्रेणी (अधमा) का माना गया है।
गुण और प्रभाव: कस्तूरी स्वाद में तीखी (कटु) और कड़वी (तिक्त) होती है। यह क्षारीय (क्षार), तासीर में गर्म (उष्णा), शुक्र धातु/वीर्य को बढ़ाने वाली (शुक्रला) और पचने में भारी (गुरु) होती है।
रोगनाशक क्षमता (उपयोग): यह कफ दोष, वात दोष, विष (जहर), उल्टी, शीत (ठंड लगने की समस्या), दौर्गन्ध्य (शरीर की दुर्गन्ध) और शोष (शरीर के सूखने या क्षय रोग) को पूरी तरह नष्ट करने वाली होती है।

Synonyms: It is known by the names Mriganabhi (derived from the deer's navel), Mrigamada, Sahasrabhit, Kasturika, Kasturi, and Vedhamukhya.
Three Varieties based on Origin and Quality: Musk is categorized into three distinct types based on its geographical origin and color:
Kamarupa (Assam) Origin: Musk originating from Kamarupa is black in color and is considered the best/superior most quality (shreshtha).
Nepali Origin: Musk originating from Nepal possesses a bluish hue and is considered to be of medium quality (madhyama).
Kashmiri Origin: Musk originating from the Kashmir region has a brownish/tawny complexion and is considered the inferior/lowest quality (adhama).
Properties: Musk is pungent and bitter in taste. It is alkaline in nature , hot in potency , acts as an aphrodisiac that promotes semen/spermatogenesis , and is heavy to digest .
Therapeutic Indications: It effectively destroys and cures aggravated Kapha and Vata doshas, poisoning , vomiting ,excessive feeling of cold , foul bodily odor and emaciation.
