अब कुङ्कुमम् [केसर] के विषय में:
नाम एवं पर्याय: कुङ्कुम, घुसृण, रक्त, काश्मीर, पीतक, वर, संकोच, पिशुन, धीर, वाहीक और शोणिताभिध — ये सभी केसर के विभिन्न नाम (पर्याय) हैं.
क्षेत्र के आधार पर केसर के तीन भेद (Three Varieties):
काश्मीर देशज केसर (सर्वश्रेष्ठ): काश्मीर देश के क्षेत्र में उत्पन्न होने वाला केसर जो तद्द्वेषि (श्रेष्ठ) होता है; जिसके रेशे बहुत बारीक, अधिक लाल और कमल की गंध के समान उत्तम होते हैं—वह सर्वश्रेष्ठ (उत्तम) माना गया है.
वाहीक देशज केसर (मध्यम): वाहीक देश में उत्पन्न होने वाला केसर कुछ हल्का सफेद या पीलापन लिए हुए (पाण्डुरं) होता है, जिसमें केतकी (केवड़े) जैसी गंध होती है और जिसके रेशे बारीक होते हैं—वह मध्यम श्रेणी का माना गया है.
पारसिक केसर (अधम): पारसीक (फारस) देश में उत्पन्न होने वाला, मधु जैसी गंध वाला, हल्का सफेद रंग लिए हुए और मोटे रेशों वाला केसर सबसे निम्न श्रेणी का कहा गया है.
गुण और प्रभाव: केसर स्वाद में तीखा या कटु होता है. यह स्निग्ध (चिकना), सिर के विकारों व रोगों को दूर करने वाला , तथा तिक्त होता है.
रोगनाशक क्षमता: यह उल्टी का नाश करने वाला, त्वचा की रंगत/सौंदर्य को सुधारने वाला, चेहरे के काले दाग-धब्बों को दूर करने वाला तथा त्रिदोष (वात, पित्त और कफ तीनों दोषों) का पूरी तरह शमन करने वाला होता है.
Now describing Kunkumam [Kesar / Saffron]:
Synonyms: Kunkuma, Ghusrina, Rakta, Kashmira, Pitaka, Vara, Sankocha, Pishuna, Dhira, Vahika, and Shonitabhid are the various names of saffron.
Three Varieties based on Geographical Origin:
Kashmiri Saffron (Best Quality): The saffron produced in the region of Kashmir, which is superior ,features very fine filaments , is deeply red and possesses an exquisite fragrance resembling that of a lotus . It is considered the best/supreme .
Vahika Saffron (Medium Quality): The saffron produced in the Vahika region is considered pale , possesses the fragrance of the Ketaki flower and has fine filaments . It is regarded as medium quality .
Parasika Saffron (Inferior Quality): The saffron originating from the Parasika (Persian) region possesses a honey-like fragrance is slightly pale in color and has thick filaments.It is stated to be of the lowest/inferior quality .
Properties: Saffron is pungent in taste. It is unctuous/oily , cures head-related pains and disorders and is bitter .
Therapeutic Indications: It stops vomiting , enhances complexion and skin luster , cures facial blemishes/pigmentation and completely pacifies and eradicates the aggravation of all three doshas .
