पर्यायवाची नाम तथा भेद: बर्बरी, तुंबरी, तुंगी, खरपुष्पा, अजगन्धिका और पर्णास — ये वनतुलसी के नाम हैं। इनमें से काले रंग की वनतुलसी को 'कठिल्लक' और 'कुठेरक' कहा जाता है। सफेद रंग की वनतुलसी को 'अर्जक' कहा गया है, और इससे अलग एक अन्य भेद 'वटपत्र' कहलाता है।
औषधीय गुण: तीनों प्रकार की वनतुलसी रूक्ष (रूखी), शीत (ठंडी प्रकृति), कटु (तीखी) और विदाही (जलन पैदा करने वाली) होती है। यह तीक्ष्ण (तेज), रुचिकारक (भोजन में रुचि जगाने वाली), हृदय के लिए हितकारी, दीपन (पाचन अग्नि को बढ़ाने वाली) और पचने में हल्की होती है।
रोग निवारण: यह पित्त दोष को बढ़ाने वाली है, तथा कफ दोष, वात दोष, रक्त विकार . खुजली , कृमि (कीड़े) और जहर को नष्ट करने वाली है।

Synonyms and Varieties: Barbari, Tumbari, Tungi, Kharapushpa, Ajagandhika, and Parnasa are its names. Among these, the black-colored varieties are called Kathillaka and Kutheraka. The white-colored variety is called Arjaka, and there is another distinct variety known as Vatapatra.
Properties: All three types of Barbari are dry ,cold in potency , pungent and cause a burning sensation . They are sharp/penetrating , appetizing , good for the heart , digestive stimulants and light to digest .
Therapeutic Indications: It aggravates Pitta dosha , but pacifies and cures Kapha and Vata doshas, blood disorders , itching/pruritus ,worm infestations and toxic conditions/poisoning .
